Last update: 19.12.2011
Transport in the High Tatras is provided by two main transport systems operated by ZSSK – Tatra Electric Railways (TEŽ- TER) and Cog Railway (OŽ- CR).
Tatra Electric Railways
Tatra Electric Railways serve two lines:
- Poprad – Tatry – Starý Smokovec – Štrbské Pleso
- Starý Smokovec – Tatranská Lomnica.
Passengers travel in modern, low-floor electric trains sets complying with the strict European standards.
Modular electric unit 425.9 – the first modular unit of 425.9 series was put into operation in 2000. At the moment 15 electric, low-floor train sets with the capacity of 200 passengers run on the line between Poprad – Starý Smokovec – Štrbské Pleso and Starý Smokovec – Tatranská Lomnica.
Cog Railway
Cog Railway transports passengers from the station in Štrba to an important tourist starting point in the High Tatras – Štrbské Pleso. It is the only cog electric railway operated by ZSSK.
Tatra Electric Railways and Cog Railway have introduced the so-called Rail Travel Self-Service System. If you plan to spend more time in the High Tatras, we recommend buying a season pre-paid ticket and travel cheaper.
