Interesting facts about TEŽ and OŽ

  • In addition to the existing trams, 5 new hybrid cog railway units and 1 multifunctional locomotive from the renowned Swiss manufacturer Stadler Bussnang AG run on the reconstructed line, without needing to transfer at the point where the two independent systems (the Cog Railway and the Tatra Electric Railway) currently meet.
  • The multi-functional hybrid locomotive, capable of running on both cog railway and adhesion track, electric or diesel-powered, will be used primarily for maintenance and in the event of emergency situations or to power the snow blower during a calamity, when the power supply may also be interrupted.

New design

  • The new units also brought a new design to the lines of the Tatra Electric Railway and the Cog Railway with a reference to the mountaineering tradition and the peaks of the High Tatras.
  • The trains bear the names of 5 less known mountains, namely Vysoká, Stredohrot, Kostolík, Bradavica and Ganek.
  • The graphic design uses the central part of the car to represent the peak and the ascent route to it. Pictograms refer to the difficulty and necessary equipment. The time commitment is approximate and takes into account the approach from the nearest tram stops. The name of the peak along with the altitude filling the space below the windows.
  • The capacity of the new vehicles is 165 passengers (91 seated passengers + 2 wheelchair parking spaces).
  • The vehicles are equipped with: wi-fi system, air-conditioning, modern information system, video system, multi-purpose space for transporting prams, bicycles, skis, sledges and sports equipment and passenger counting equipment.
  • The design of the new cogs was based on the high mountain environment, such as fauna and flora, and the magical atmosphere of the evening sun-drenched Tatra mountains was also an inspiration.  More about the new ZSSK design can be seen in this video.

The High Tatras have been connected by ecological transport since 1908 when the Tatra Electric Railway started to operate. In 1970 they were joined by the Cog Railway, which became one of the three main attractions in the High Tatras.

During its existence it transported more than 16 million passengers. Its modernisation, together with the Tatra Electric Railway, forms a solid basis for an integrated transport system and is crucial from the point of view of sustainability and the environment in such an important region of Slovakia as the High Tatras.

Enjoy the High Tatras with the Tatra tram and the cog railway. Take a ride to Štrbské pleso and even further with the TATRY CARD.
